A good online lesson with a good teacher will teach what it’s supposed to. However, a good teacher knows that ninety minutes spent in front of a screen is not the same as ninety minutes in a classroom. After all, in a classroom, the teacher has a better chance of seeing whether a student is ‘engaged in the lesson’ or not.
With an online student, the teacher can never be sure whether the student is sending text messages, dealing with work emails or chatting with a classmate… An online student mustn’t get bored, and in order to learn anything, they must engage actively.
Keeping Students Engaged
The teacher must constantly encourage and monitor this engagement. There are now a great many online tools available for this very purpose. And we already know that a good teacher understands that… “less is more”.
So, the lesson is prepared, the teacher rubs their hands with glee, looking forward to what a lovely session it will be today… with that new interactive material. They switch on the computer, the lesson begins, the teacher clicks on the link that’s supposed to lead to that enticing application and… the screen displays: ‘Page not found’. Or: ‘We’re sorry, but this page is temporarily unavailable’. And it doesn’t matter at all that the page was working perfectly ten minutes before the lesson.
A good teacher has to stay calm, but believe me, they’re racked with frustration, stress and, above all, disappointment. It could have been such a great lesson! But because he is a good teacher, he has to be able to handle this too…
