When a student asks me: “What about an intensive course?” The very first thing that springs to mind – rather uncreatively, I must admit – is to point out that an intensive course is, quite simply, intensive. At CLT, it takes place every weekday at the school – no online sessions – from 9.30 am to 12.30 pm, with one break for coffee or a bit of small talk, and runs for fourteen days.
Anyone who wants to continue can join the next course and keep honing their Czech. The ‘intensive course’ focuses on the essentials required for that particular level. There’s simply no time for any digressions from the topic.
Maximum Progress in Minimum Time
It’s brilliant for students who want to get to grips with the language very quickly and don’t want to waste time unnecessarily. In two weeks, you’ll cover as much as you would in a standard course over three months. If you’ve got the motivation, energy and time, it’s brilliant…
But even here there’s one small ‘but’. Some people might feel that in an intensive course, the teacher simply ‘crams’, ‘forces’ or ‘pounds’ the material into their students, and that the language just sort of slips into their heads incidentally. So it’s brilliant mainly for those who aren’t afraid to work “intensively” with the teacher.
But here too – and perhaps even more so – it’s not just the teacher who works at an intense pace. There’s work waiting for the student as well. And it’s intense… But the result is worth it! It’s just intense :-)
