A group of students who do not want to study online might have a misconception... Boredom, little action, no effect. It can happen. But with a good tutor, this danger is rare.
On the other hand, students who imagine an online lesson as a short, entertaining Netflix movie aren't right either. So, what does a good, engaging, and effective online lesson actually look like?
The Lesson is Led by a Real Person in Real Time
First of all, it is good to mention that the lesson is led by a real tutor. There is no robot or static dummy reciting grammar rules. The tutor teaches in an online environment in real time. They respond immediately to the student's needs, laugh, frown, or make faces...
They use all the proven tools they have tested specifically for the online environment. Opposite the tutor "sits" the student or students. Ideally in a quiet environment without distracting noise, with the camera turned on, a sufficiently fast internet connection, and a good computer.
It's nice when the student is at least a bit "friends" with the computer. If, instead of the student, I only see the passing overhead wires of a trolleybus ("sorry, but I have to run an errand, I'll watch the lesson on my phone in the trolleybus") or if I see nothing but a dark camera rectangle instead of the student, the lesson will not be ideal. Not for me, nor for the other students.
In short, a good online lesson needs both sides to be functional. Then we can rejoice at the end and say: "Yeah, good job, looking forward to next time..."
